Expressionist Dogs

6/29/2014

Commission work is always a great thing.  You take your existing skills and interests in certain styles and you apply them to someone else's request.   I was asked to use a thickly applied, expressionist painting style with drips and blobs.  An impression of the dogs was more important than a realistic representation.

Here's a couple of mates hanging out on their stumps.  They're probably wondering what their old tree hangout is being manufactured into at the local furniture factory.

I'm exhibiting with Sarah-Jane Cook in August as part of the 7 Rooms event.  Here's an example of some of her ceramics which I am totally loving right now.  I met Sarah-Jane last year when I worked for her company Active Arts teaching art to youngsters.  Coincidentally we had both booked tickets to fly to Greece in May that year.  We eventually caught up afterwards and discussed the excellent ceramic work in Greece and how influential the trip was.  I'm loving these little pieces that Sarah-Jane is making at the moment.   Take a look at her website here : http://roustaboutart.wordpress.com/

Remake Remodel

I've been running into Port Adelaide artist Ned Bajic a bit lately.  I really wanted to introduce you to his work if you haven't already seen it.  It's playful, often three dimensional and in the case of the artwork below takes some influence from one of my favourite artists Van Gogh.  We're teaming up with a group of artists for a SALA exhibition at Forge Warehouse called "Develop".  It's part of the 7 Rooms St. Vincent Street Exhibitions starting August 1st.

Steve Squared Exhibition @ Mayfair Bakery, SALA 2014

I'm teaming up with artist Steve Glass AKA "SG1" for an exhibition of work at Port Adelaide's Mayfair Bakery on St. Vincent Street for SALA.  SG1's work is much like an isometric puzzle that protrudes from the canvas. Very geometric and mechanical.  I'll be contrasting his work with organic and loose artworks such as the one below.  Looking forward to this.   The exhibition will run through August and the opening night will be part of the "7 Rooms" SALA event beginning at 6:00pm August 1st.   The facebook event has more details "  https://www.facebook.com/events/628426960580568/

Sleeping Spirit Masks

I was researching spirit masks from African, Israeli, Apache, and Japanese cultures a while back.  It's quite fascinating how humans have used masks in ritual dance, theater, spiritual ceremonies and in war.  I've fashioned my masks out of raku clay and designed them as sleeping spirits that are ever present and protective.  The aim was to have them as wall hangings in the house or garden.

Age of a Tree

I had a chat with this fellow once about trees.  How old is the oldest tree on earth?  Where do Australia's trees fit into that timeline?  It's amazing to think that when settlers arrived in Tasmania they were cutting down some of the oldest trees in the world.  Google oldest tree in the world if you are keen, we found in quite interesting.  California has some rather old trees and some of the tallest in the world.    So  I painted a giant tree in a somewhat open landscape. Perhaps that tree was surrounded by hundreds of trees at one point in time, but not any more.

Gnome Pun Intended

I recently took on a film job that included props such as gaffa tape, boiling water, chains, hammers, saws and gnomes.  Sound interesting?   I can't give much more away because at this point in time my hands are tied by producers and such.  However I did sneak this little screen grab out of the editing room today so you can all get a taste of what is soon to be released.  Visit again soon for the full video release.

The Hushes "Rain and Snow"

Here's a video I put together for The Hushes. As an overlay I flashed an LED light in front of the camera. Yet again I've used the studio space at Forge Creative Warehouse in Port Adelaide. We had about half an hour of time up our sleeves to run off a couple of lip syncs so the base footage was pretty simple but to create a little playfulness the dancing lights were added. Given more time I would have made the lights sync up better to vignette the focal point of each shot but the random positioning does overlay quite well most of the time. Check it out :

I found a photo of this piece I painted a number of years back at Psychetronica.  Not too long ago this canvas was stretched over a table top and varnished.  It looked pretty cool.  Here's a video of the sort of environment I was painting in at Psychetronica.

Mix Mastering

Here's a photo of my son Oscar when we were in the mixing studio at Mixmasters. I think he was overwhelmed by the gadgetry and was hoping to shift a few sliders and turn some dials.  Looks like that's Andy Roberts in the background.  After buying my first DSLR camera, Andy Roberts was the first musician I made a clip for.  Prior to that I was mostly experimenting with stop motion using a Nikon D40.  The clip "Layers" was a bit of stop motion and some regular video but as an experiment I projected it onto the wall of my lounge room and re-filmed it to see what resulted.
