After listening to a song on the radio my son Oscar says "Keytars are better than guitars. A keytar is like a guitar but it's also a piano so it's better". At the end of 2013 Badjonni and I were working upstairs at Forge Warehouse preparing the room to be used as a studio and workspace for film makers and photographers. The walls were covered in patchy paint work so we began with a new coat of paint in some areas. I got distracted and ran off for a little to paint the crow mural that you see upon entry at Forge. By the time I was done Badjonni had a finished the wall he was working on and discovered we had a small amount of left over paint. We couldn't let it go to waste so we started circling it in trails over the floor. All that work many months ago has now become the backdrop to the work of various film makers and photographers. Take a look at this clip from The Rememberz which features our handy work. In this article I'm talking about Forge Warehouse and some of the things related to managing gallery and studio space there. He seemed a bit sad every time someone walked past without noticing that he was trying to make them smile. We talked for a while when no one was around (he of course went into statue mode when others were passing by). I arranged to film him the following day, capturing his attempts to amuse observers. The film below sums it up though. You gotta work hard for the money. Most people walk past, unsure how to interact and then once every so often, someone edges forward. There's one more step toward tonight's dinner he thinks. Helping someone achieve their vision through film is at it's most enjoyable when it comes to realization and the job is done. Writer for "Meanstreak" Benjamin Roberts rang me before the job talking about gnomes being tortured by a seemingly lovely 1950's housewife with a secret penchant for torture and discipline. It was a well structured script that was filmed within a day at Forge Warehouse. I've been given permission by the band to give the clip an early release through my website, so here it is - "Meanstreak" music video by The Timbers Commission work is always a great thing. You take your existing skills and interests in certain styles and you apply them to someone else's request. I was asked to use a thickly applied, expressionist painting style with drips and blobs. An impression of the dogs was more important than a realistic representation.
Here's a couple of mates hanging out on their stumps. They're probably wondering what their old tree hangout is being manufactured into at the local furniture factory.
I'm exhibiting with Sarah-Jane Cook in August as part of the 7 Rooms event. Here's an example of some of her ceramics which I am totally loving right now. I met Sarah-Jane last year when I worked for her company Active Arts teaching art to youngsters. Coincidentally we had both booked tickets to fly to Greece in May that year. We eventually caught up afterwards and discussed the excellent ceramic work in Greece and how influential the trip was. I'm loving these little pieces that Sarah-Jane is making at the moment. Take a look at her website here : http://roustaboutart.wordpress.com/

I've been running into Port Adelaide artist Ned Bajic a bit lately. I really wanted to introduce you to his work if you haven't already seen it. It's playful, often three dimensional and in the case of the artwork below takes some influence from one of my favourite artists Van Gogh. We're teaming up with a group of artists for a SALA exhibition at Forge Warehouse called "Develop". It's part of the 7 Rooms St. Vincent Street Exhibitions starting August 1st.
http://remakeremodel.blog.com/2014/04/30/two-new-pieces/ I'm teaming up with artist Steve Glass AKA "SG1" for an exhibition of work at Port Adelaide's Mayfair Bakery on St. Vincent Street for SALA. SG1's work is much like an isometric puzzle that protrudes from the canvas. Very geometric and mechanical. I'll be contrasting his work with organic and loose artworks such as the one below. Looking forward to this. The exhibition will run through August and the opening night will be part of the "7 Rooms" SALA event beginning at 6:00pm August 1st. The facebook event has more details " https://www.facebook.com/events/628426960580568/
I was researching spirit masks from African, Israeli, Apache, and Japanese cultures a while back. It's quite fascinating how humans have used masks in ritual dance, theater, spiritual ceremonies and in war. I've fashioned my masks out of raku clay and designed them as sleeping spirits that are ever present and protective. The aim was to have them as wall hangings in the house or garden.
I had a chat with this fellow once about trees. How old is the oldest tree on earth? Where do Australia's trees fit into that timeline? It's amazing to think that when settlers arrived in Tasmania they were cutting down some of the oldest trees in the world. Google oldest tree in the world if you are keen, we found in quite interesting. California has some rather old trees and some of the tallest in the world. So I painted a giant tree in a somewhat open landscape. Perhaps that tree was surrounded by hundreds of trees at one point in time, but not any more.
I recently took on a film job that included props such as gaffa tape, boiling water, chains, hammers, saws and gnomes. Sound interesting? I can't give much more away because at this point in time my hands are tied by producers and such. However I did sneak this little screen grab out of the editing room today so you can all get a taste of what is soon to be released. Visit again soon for the full video release.
Here's a video I put together for The Hushes. As an overlay I flashed an LED light in front of the camera. Yet again I've used the studio space at Forge Creative Warehouse in Port Adelaide. We had about half an hour of time up our sleeves to run off a couple of lip syncs so the base footage was pretty simple but to create a little playfulness the dancing lights were added. Given more time I would have made the lights sync up better to vignette the focal point of each shot but the random positioning does overlay quite well most of the time. Check it out : I found a photo of this piece I painted a number of years back at Psychetronica. Not too long ago this canvas was stretched over a table top and varnished. It looked pretty cool. Here's a video of the sort of environment I was painting in at Psychetronica. |
